Traditional Hereford Cattle
A small herd of native-breed Traditional Herefords — chosen for their hardiness, gentle temperament, and suitability for sympathetic conservation grazing.
Grazing with purpose
We run a small herd of native-breed Traditional Hereford cattle at Stenbury Manor Farm. The breed was chosen deliberately — Traditional Herefords are a hardy, unimproved native breed well suited to the Island's climate, and their calm, methodical grazing makes them ideal for the sensitive management of species-rich pasture that is central to our land stewardship approach.
The herd grazes across the holding year-round, including on the BNG habitat bank parcels where their adaptive grazing plays a key role in the habitat management plan. They are grass-fed throughout, with no supplementary feeding beyond the farm's own hay in the winter months.
The Traditional Hereford is a rare breed with a very different character from the commercial Hereford — smaller, hardier, and with the distinctive white face and rich mahogany coat of the original breed. We are proud to be contributing, in a small way, to its conservation.
